former GOP governor endorses BO

“An element of their party has pitched so far to the extreme right on issues important to women, immigrants, seniors and students that they’ve proven incapable of governing for the people,” Mr. Crist wrote in a Sunday op-ed in the Tampa Bay Times. “The truth is that the party has failed to demonstrate the kind of leadership or seriousness voters deserve.”

You know times are rough when even Republicans don't want to be associated with this party. True, the Tea Partiers are pushing Republicans back to a simpler time, but by "simpler", they mean back to a time that was uneducated and grossly uninformed. Back to when women's rights or multiculturalism wasn't important or even existent. I have no idea how they feel they can remain relevant or be the voice of a people to the country, especially one that boasts one of the most diverse populations in the world and a country that lead the charge in the women's rights movement. Thankfully, the GOP has signed their own death warrant and has made themselves a very real non-threat.

Kudos to Charlie Crist and a small victory in defection!

Three Jerks Make a Masterpiece

The Beastie Boys were a big part formative years and well on to my adult ones. To this day their songs have amazing specific memories attached to them. Mostly being a teenager, mostly in someone's backyard while we ran around like life couldn't get any better. I preferred punk and indie and was a snob about rap, but even I couldn't deny their jams were necessary and important and loved them with all my heart.

Adam Yauch and his scratchy voice was my favourite Beastie.

I won't even attempt a written piece about what this loss means - in personal, musical or humanitarian terms - so here are some tributes from people who phrased it much better than I could have:

PEACE, ADAM

The Nation: The Gritty Legacy Of Adam Yauch

Generation Yauch

How Adam Yauch Grew Into His Voice

My beloved Mets played tribute, by strolling to the plate to an all-Beastie Boys lineup:

David Wright, Brass Monkey
Ruben Tejada, Intergalactic
Daniel Murphy, No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn
Lucas Duda, The New Style
Scott Hairston, Root Down
Ike Davis, Fight For Your Right (To Party)
Andres Torres, So What'cha Want
Josh Thole, Make Some Noise
Dillon Gee, Body Movin'
Vinny Rottino, Paul Revere

Amazing example of their never ending little kid antics, irreverence, and humour.

Finally, how could you not fall madly in love with someone who came up this rhyme:

"I want to say a little something that's long overdue, the disrespect to women has got to be through. To all the mothers and the sisters and the wives and friends, I wanna offer my love and respect till the end."

Here's to growing up.

rockets red glare

I had a book about Challenger flight mission and the teacher, Christina McAuliffe (second from left), when I was little and have been basically plagued by this space travel ever since. I have this whole crew's faces memorized and every time I see them I get a little sad thinking about how excited they must have been and how traumatic it was for their families that day. Look at their smiles! So excited to see that rocket go up and so utterly broken when it fell apart like that. I used to weirdly mourn Christina specifically, maybe because she reminded me of my favourite elementary school teacher, Mrs. Moore?

I think the idea of being in space is fascinating, but still cannot grasp that idea of people in space as "natural" or necessary act. If anyone offered me the chance to go out into space, I would say no in a flat second and would absolutely DREAD anyone I loved doing it.

Read more about the sadness here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Shuttle_Challenger

Maybe that's why I hate regular plane flying so much.

I HAVE A HERNIA

So I pretty sure my insides are pouring out of where my appendix surgery cut through. Ask me how much this shit hurts. I DARE YOU!

I completely forgot about this band until the other day and I just thought, "oh my god, how did I ever like these guys? They're so boring." Well, fast forward to this painful, painful night and I'm pretty into this song. More so into the video - that's some Royal Tenenbaums shit right there. I only hope to be as fun as parent as these guys!

ahhh whatever

“Love leaped out in front of us like a murderer in an alley leaping out of nowhere, and struck us both at once. As lightning strikes, as a Finnish knife strikes! She, by the way, insisted afterwards that it wasn’t so, that we had, of course, loved each other for a long, long time, without knowing each other, never having seen each other… ”
― Mikhail Bulgakov, The Master and Margarita

I should be outside, but instead I'm stuck inside trying to write about Irish and Jewish nationalism.

most of the time

When I start my life of fitness, it will all be done to the tune of Robyn. The part where she starts dancing: YAHHHHH!!

I would totally send this to Gavin if I was trying to woo him.. so sweet and soft!

Such a beautiful version.

Summer Jam.

I for some reason appreciate the idea for this video. Mainly because I hate Jäger and it also induces vomit.

the economics of immortality

"In a 2008 broadcast on the Arte German & French TV, de Grey confirmed that according to him, the first human who will live up to 1,000 years is probably already alive now, and might even be today between 50 and 60 years old."

by far the bestest

I was lucky enough to see this guy speak. He's well spoken, hilarious, brilliant and completely inappropriate all at once.

True love always, for real.

Gavin and I have had some real adventures. We've climbed roofs, fences, trespassed, painted - all things I thought I'd never do. Gavin is adventurous and irreverent in a way I can only dream of. That, and he still manages to be the most intelligent and the bravest.

He pushes me to be a better person and I've never wanted to make anyone as proud as I want to make him.

He is precious and he is mine.

Happy Anniversary!

I could make you rue the day

I'm back at school this semester and signed up for all these get fit schemes, so I wish myself success on both fronts.

I hope 2012 lifts me up and I hope the same for you.
