PROPERLY UNHERALED MUSICIANS

Pavement reunion Toronto Olympic Island 2010:

Besides Steve being dreamy man superb, all I could think about was Bob just having so much fun out there (Bob is second man to the left, the one who is smiling a smile equal to Mark). This is a Spin article I saved and retyped because I couldn't find it on the internet. Oh gee.

"To be sure, many PUMs are their band's special gimmick, whether intentionally or not. Noveselic is one of the tallest bassists of all time. What a gimmick! And who else but Anthony plays bass shaped like a Jack Daniel's bottle? Make mine a double! This brings me to the part where I say something I may regret in the morning, which is: Bob Nastanovich was the most important member of Pavement. Now, I'm not suggesting that Nastanovich-the sometimes pecussionist whose biggest contribution to live performances was yelling into the mic as loudly as possible-was as talented as Steve Malkumus, Spiral Stairs, Mark Ibol, or Steve West. Not even close. He was barely a step up from Bez, the freaky Happy Mondays Dancer.

But he's a shining example of why seemingly inconsequential members of famous groups deserve more kudos than they generally get. Nastanovich may have ridden Malkumus' coattails to achieve glory throughout the 1990s. At least he gave every ounce of his beng to that coattail riding. He could just sat back, snoozed through the gigs, and scammed all the horn-rimmed hotties headed Malkumus' way after every show. Instead, Nastanovich helped set Pavement's quirky tone. And by that I mean he banged on shit whenever shit needed to be banged on.

Like many PUMs, Nastanovich's biggest contribution was nonmusicial: He always seemed smiling. You can't replace infectious enthusiam. Can you?"
